seatown.org.uk seatown tourist guide homepage homepage deadmans bay bed and breakfasts holiday agencies holiday cottages holiday parks food & drink shops things to do contact us dogs on beaches seatown was never a town, as the name might imply, but undoubtedly was somewhat bigger and more important in years gone by. the suffix is anglo-have meant originally just farm. our way to the sea lies down a winding lane, between height grassy banks where the primroses and celandine flourish in springtime, and where the june sun makes the lean royal with foxgloves. it is three-quarters of a mile to seatown. it is only a tiny hamlet-a few cottages, a farm, and a pub which lies almost on the beach. here the wynreford stream meanders out through the shingle, and the cliffs springs up high to east and west. golden cap , to the west, is the highest sea-cliff on the southern coast of england (619 feet). a hundred and fifty years ago there were thirty or forty fishermen here: at least, they were fishermen by day, but night they were smugglers, and many a contraband cargo was run in here. one may hardly doubt that many of the inhabitants of chideock were also implicated in his trade. in truth, the village used to be full of teals of the old smuggling days-of wild rushes to the west rocks below golden cap when a boatload of liquor was being rowed ashore from a french ship; of how each man would scramble away inland to some hideout far from chesil beach as fast as his legs would carry him. (the ruined chapel of stanton st.gabriel, on the far side of golden cap, was a favourite receiving house.) the smugglers at one time had a leader known as "the colonel", who organised the trade from seatown to charmouth , many cargoes being run in to st gabriel’s' lonely beach. later the contraband would be loaded on to pack horse, to be taken through the marsh woods vale and further inland by devious bridleways and tracks. in the time the preventive men became very sharp, making it more difficult to run cargoes had to be sunk several times, to be lifted later, with attempts to land the kegs made at eype's mouth at burton bradstock below thorncombe beacon, at bridport harbour and at abbotsbury. seatown had its own coastguard station in last century. the cottages remain, above the anchor inn, but the coast guards were disbanded in 1912. many visitors use their time on the jurassic coast to visit some of the local art galleries . this website is built and operated by westcountry online who are accredited as a jurassic coast quality business. this award is given for successfully completing the jurassic coast quality business scheme and demonstrating high standards of operation and a commitment to the values of the jurassic coast world heritage site. copyright ©2018 www.seatown.org.uk - all rights reserved printable view
